Thanks for the search, Ed. So AR referred to 3 types of tobacco: 'negro head', 'black' and 'navy cut'. I don't think 'navy cut' is a brand name, although Players made 'Navy Cut' cigarettes. I can confirm that for children tobacco tins were highly valued - I had at least a dozen, with everything under the sun in them. I remember one huge one, full of Meccano nuts and bolts. They were air and water-tight - no wonder the Swallows used them.
