First of all, I think this is a not-uncommon literary convention --
I've encountered it in the writings of other authors. (In fact I
*think* I have encountered it in the writings of other English children's
authors).
Second, though, I think there is a transitional state between asleep and
awake where one can be uncertain of just where one is (especially when one
is gradually waking from a dream). I've experienced this both as a child
and as an adult. Or maybe I just never do know where I am for sure?
