Storm cones were used up to the '70s I seem to remember. Sited out side Lifeboat stations, Harbourmasters offices and the like.
Cone point up = gale from the northerly sector. ie from west to east passing through north,. Cone point down = gale from southerly sector. ie east to west including south.
Seems pretty vague but with local knowledge very useful. I miss them, just as I miss manned light houses and lightships.
