Titty (say) should have stood still holding the compass, and given
instructions to Roger so that he walked in the right direction,
stopped when he was about to go out of her sight, and stood still
while she caught him up. By repeating this they could have gone
in a fairly straight line until they hit the beck that flows through
Swallowdale.

Of course, the plot required them to get lost. But it's a pity John
(or Nancy, who might have been more likely to know this method)
didn't explain it to them afterwards.
