I read the above comments with interest but was sad to see so many who said their children haven't inherited their love of reading.
Sadly the art of reading aloud seems to have died away in most TV driven households, and more importantly, the knowledge when to begin reading aloud. Anyone who's gone to a preschool and seen the delight when a teacher sits down to read a picturebook to the children must realise its never too early to start.
If you begin when the child is a baby, reading or flipping through a picturebook and commenting on the colours and shapes, then you set up the expectation that books are a good thing. But make it a habit - every night for just a few minutes.
I was lucky to be brought up by a father who told stories from his head, and both my husband and myself told stories or read to our children from birth, picturebooks and then children's novels beginning with Charlotte's Web. Even when they could read for themselves they still had their 'chapter a night' and continued this for many years.
It does take sacrifice on the part of the parents and the decision to turn off the TV when you begin your family.
