You're right to a certain point John - my own children aren't much interested in things past. I've been editing my father's biography (born 1908 and died 2002) and compared to him at the same age, my own son aged 20 is very unenergetic. But then I think of what Sam can do my father couldn't at the same age. He can drive, has visited overseas - and not at the pleasure of the armed services, can build and use a computer and a large range of technical equipment, has an almost encylopaedic knowledge of music back to the late 50's, understands(and fiercely debates) the big bang and other origin theories etc etc...
And I think interest in things past grows - my daughter made a special effort to be in Turkey at Gallipolli for last years commemoration services.
Maybe your son needs a more accurate picture of the world - sounds like all he recognises are the bad bits.I suppose in the end it all depends on what their thoughts and ideas are about life in general. I know overseas travel for both of mine sparked far more than anything tiny little New Zealand ever could. It may all come back to challenge in life which is somehow harder to find now its not against the elements.

P.S. - I also knew the sea shanty about Rio - but we pronounced it Ree - o.
