James, is Minas Tirith a tower? I wrote on this Tarboard that "he" was a friend of AR because I thought he was a Czech or Slovakian [or Czechoslovakian] writer! I was wrong, and somebody corrected me on that. That is all you will find on the lapsed message. Try putting "arthur ransome minas tirith" in a web search engine like yahoo or Lycos, and you will get the connection, the Czech Tolkein fanclub homepage. AR wrote to JRRT about a hobbit being referred to as a "man" and JRR corrected it in the next edition [see AR, Sig from Mars, ed Brogan].
PS I haven't read the Ring cycle [or seen any of the operas ;-) ]
