Well, I think the white cross is till there, Ros -- I seem to remember that it was repainted by someone not so long ago.

As far as leading lights go, oh yes, they work all right. They're not just a theory, they're a fact. Sometimes, as with Wild Cat's, they're unoffical. And sometimes, as when before the candle lanterns were used, they're unlit too. When they're not lighted they're referred to as "leading marks" instead of leading lights. Another name for leading marks is "transits" (although that has a broader definition as well.) They're in use all over the world to help guide ships safely into harbours. Pretty neat, huh?
