I apologize for my earlier bit of jargon and will preemptively supply an explanation before one of our nautically challenged colleagues rightly takes me to task (assuming anyone beside me has followed this thread so far).

By “leaving red lead” on the rocks, I refer to the traditional bottom paint of boats in my neck of the woods (green is also a common color, though my family never uses it). When you hit a rock, you inevitably leave a bit of your bottom paint behind. You see slight smears of paint on the more insidious rocks and ledges. We are fortunate to be in a fairly isolated place, so our rocks are for the most part free from paint (it comes off after a while). Where there are many boats, however, most rocks are dabbed with splotches of various colors.
