What's wrong with extending copyright?
I suppose an alternative would be that copyright expires when the writer/artist does. Might make a whole lot of legatee families poorer(not necessarily a bad thing) but also opens up the possibility of sequels or 'works in the style of' not being able to be refused 'on principle' by trustees or other bureaucrats.
It's an open question as to whether the whole concept is good or bad for either the publishing industry or the ongoing reputation of individual authors.
