I think the cleaning of glasses was AR's way of underlining how professorial Dick was. I grew up in Oxford in the 40s and knew a number of dons and professors (including J.R.R.Tolkien -- but that's another thread). A number of them had the habit of preceding any contribution to a conversation by either taking off his glasses or, if a pipe smoker, taking out his pipe, fiddle about, marshall the thoughts of what was presumably a vary active mind, and then finally produce clearly reasoned opinion or statement. I suspect that was the way academics were expected to conduct themselves in those days. Dick, not being a pipe smoker, was restricted to his glasses. I am sure Dr. Callum, his father, behaved in exact;ly them same way.
