The Picts were the original inhabitants of Scotland from prehistoric times. Although considered by the Romans as barbaric savages, one only has to see some of the rock carvings which they have left scattered around Scotland to realise that this is far from the case. They were also the original inhabitants of Skara Brae, in the Orkney Islands. They were displaced by the Scots who came from Ireland and settled on the west coast of Scotland, later spreading all over the country.
