I think thatyour last sentence, Eric, pretty well sews it up. The domestic environment is crucial. I visited some friends recently and their younger son, Gavin, aged 7 and in second grade at school, proudly showed me the FIVE novels which he had read last year. This is apart from the Harry Potters which he devours as they come out. Last weekend he was brandishing a plastic sword and "we're having mediaeval wars, Uncle Dave!"
