My first Ransome, when I was about 10, was WDM and it has always remained my favorite. (I found BS to be the weakest; the villain was too obvious, and his character too one-dimensional, and I missed the twins, who were my favorite characters from CC.)

Only when I re-read WD as an adult did I also appreciate just how well-constructed, and well-written, it was. Likewise I only really appreciated PM as an adult.

Reading the books as a child, I approached each new one with trepidation, fearing that it wouldn't live up to my expectations or that, worse, I would learn something terrible about the characters that would ruin the whole series for me. For instance, until I actually read it, the title of _Great Northern?_ with its ominous question mark terrified me; I lived in northern North America and I was afraid that somehow the greatness of being a northerner was about to be questioned!

Needless to say, all my fears were groundless.
