Dear Ed,

Thank you for the notes on Nancy rigging the Scarab for the first time.

As you say mousing the sister-hooks gives me the data I need.

Mousing \Mous"ing\, n.
1. The act of hunting mice.

2. (Naut.) A turn or lashing of spun yarn or small stuff, or
a metallic clasp or fastening, uniting the point and shank
of a hook to prevent its unhooking or straighening out.

{Sister hooks}, a pair of hooks fitted together, the shank of
one forming a mousing for the other; -- called also {match
hook}.

Sister Hooks
These innovative self locking hooks have numerous applications for either racing or cruising

Manufactured from 316 stainless steel for strength and corrosion resistance.
Used as replacements for quick links and shackles where fast disconnection is needed.
Available in 4 sizes.

Part no Description
16.42 Sister hooks 25mm LOA
16.44 Sister hooks 31mm LOA
16.46 Sister hooks 38mm LOA
16.48 Sister hooks 50mm LOA

So obviously I was wrong and Scarab didn't use a traveller on the mast.

Obviously Nancy did not trust the sister hooks and moused them, which would stop the sail coming down in an accident and means AR's picture of the D's in a mess is correct.

Maybe I should use this detail in mine. More issues to think on.

As Lunes are associated with Hawks I thought I would use a symbol of a Hawk for the flag. Seems to match the other flags. I will have to ask my daughters.

The water temp in the sea in Australia in Dec is about 18 degrees C and that is cold. I get ear aches after about 30 minutes in the surf.

A midships main sheet is not a bad idea but the blocks can get badly twisted. And it means the blocks need to be off the thwart if we want to row it comfortably or I make some form of removable system.

I would use a small block as the traveller rather than the shackle.

Thanks again.

John
