Shooting from a porch in that part of Alberta at that time would be seen as the same as banging a gong - it also scared away the coyotes. The nearest neighbor was eight miles away, and a gun in a truck was as common as a hammer.
My Boy Scout whistle is different - it is about three inches long, one half an inch in diameter, and has CANADA written below the Boy Scout emblem. It isn't very loud - perhaps it suffered a ship wreck at some point. Regards. Dan
