My university leased a farmhouse in the Lakes for accommodation for recreational and educational purposes. It was watered by a feed from a stream up the hill. The only possible risk might be a dead sheep in the headwaters, so we were advised to boil the water.

As for hot water, it is probable that Cook used a large old solid fuel range, like a modern AGA and like an AGA these often had a hot water tank attached. The range would probably have been kept lit all of the time in winter and summer. After all it would have been hard to keep relighting it to whip up an apple pie for the GA.
