At the end of PM (ch 24), the GA refers to the “obstinate stupidity of the constable” ie Sammy Lewthwaite and to the police being ”disgracefully incompetent”. Sammy got a wink from Nancy to suggest her involvment! Rather galling for him! Then the irony when the GA says that “the two charming and well-behaved children” who rescued her would be “most suitable friends” for the Amazons!

Earlier after the burglary (ch 21) the GA expects the police to lock up suspicious characters even before they do any burgling, which might be difficult for the police even in the thirties!

When Jacky brings the milk next morning after the burglary he knows all about it from “Old Mother Lewthwaite” (Ch 20) which suggests that her (& Billy’s) cottage is up the river road near Watersmeet.

Finally (ch 25) Peggy says about old Carrotty the porter at the station at the foot of the lake that “He knows her” ie the GA as “He used to work here (ie Beckfoot) years ago”. Perhaps he worked there casually like Billy Lewthwaite rather than every day?
