Hi,

I'd always assumed it was Ambleside. They didn't want to go to Waterhead where the Steamers moor, because it was so busy, so they went up the river (is it the Rothay or the Brothay, I get terribly confused!) which is navigable up until about the bridge I think, which takes you more or less to Ambleside.

But, of course, as there is very little description of the village (we remain with Dick holding on to the riverbank for grim death) it is difficult to know whether Ransome waved a magic wand and made Coniston village accessible by river or not.

Any other thoughts?
