1. What is a Fabian, you forget that we colonials are lost on the nuances of English political life. Consider that I know who the Black and Tans were and did, and that is about all. Well I know the main parties and Lloyd George.
2. A lay down misere is a term from my Baptist Great Aunt, who skinned me for my pocket money quite often at cards, Euchre. I was about 17-18 and she would have been in her 70's, went to church every Sunday, never married, quiet, played the organ, and a real card sharp. As a result of the experience I still do not gamble, and I believe she achieved her objective.
3. Scarab with a clean bottom, new sail, a COOT sailing her with a lighter crew than Amazon crew. Amazon would have been older, probably heavier with water in the planks and a slimy bottom. A COOT who grew up sailing on the Broads where the winds would be tricky as against the lake, which even with the fells would be a lot more open. And a Boat builder who was copying the Amazon and would be less than human if he did not improve the lines a fraction. Taking 2 inches off the bow angle at the mast thwart width adds to the theoretical boat speed a lot and it would take a real eye to pick the difference.
4. Plus AR had a sense of humour, I also added the note :Just grinning after the Lay down misere.
5. I always scream for the underdog anyway, who else would have backed Paul Keating to win the election he won.
6. I would say Scarab by a short bob stay.
Of course I have been wrong many times before.
