Dear All:

Thanks for the bit on all the trains, obvioulsy a new comer has a bit to learn. And I am not the first to wonder at these facts, you guys are great.

I finished reading SW for the first time in years, Saturday. I had read the comment in the last MM about the surveying with the compass. And Anne said I could not go to sleep on the Lounge with the cats. I had to do something, and I was sick of work, so I decided to play with AR's map of Secret Water and see what I could make of it.

The only thing that John and Titty did not do is measure the length of their baseline. So from the final plan I determined it was 3/8th of a mile.

The original sketch in the book prepared by their Dad is pretty way off from the Dyke, but I used and fixed the position of the Kraal relative to the SW corner of the map and then plotted the position of the Kraal and the original camp site. The distance in separation was about 0.5 miles.

Then I worked out the north point angle (about 8.69 degrees) and then could sketch out the compass.

I then had a lot of fun working out what they meant by the angles, some of the annotation is a bit hard to decifer and I had wished I had a parallel ruler set or a drawing board. I think I have them sorted out correctly at least in the NW corner which is all I have plotted. I can see why it took Titty all day to do some days, it is very time consuming. The interesting ones are where I think I read "E (onehalf) north" and "east (one quarter) south."

I will have to photocopy it and blow it up. But I am intruiged to see how close I can get to the original.

What I have done so far should be on my web site in a few hours depending on forces beyond my control.

Anyone tasted eel. Is it ok to eat?

John Nichols
