The Netherlands was (were?) a Spanish colony for much of Elizabeth's reign, though what is now the country of that name was in revolt in the latter part of the 16th century (though Spain did not give up until the mid-17th century).
Slater Bob's term "Dutchies" doubtless has the same origin as "Pennsylvania Dutch" -- mishearing "Deutsch" (the German for "German").
Similar transliteration problems led to the belief that Elizabeth's Germans found plentiful gold in the Lake District. One of their mines came widely known as "Goldscope" (it is in the Derwent Fells area) -- changed from the original "Gottes Gab" (God's Gift -- from the rich haul of copper, not gold -- shades of the SADMC!)
Incidentally, I travelled the west coast main line regularly in the 1950s, from my home in the northern Lakes to London to get to boarding school in Suffolk, and all but the fastest expresses stopped at Rugby and Crewe.
