I see your point but have to disagree. My family used to go hiking and my father generally carried everything while we were young - probably above 30 odd kg, when he was in his fifties and early sixties(he was in his late forties when his first child was born).
He ran a factory and I remember him carrying quite heavy loads up until he retired in his seventies.And he died at 93 - no heart problems there.
The load thing has only come to the fore in recent years - even twenty years ago kids carried heavy loads of schoolbooks and most thought nothing of it, and most adults carried what they felt they could managed, not what was 'correct'.
