Despite Ed's well-thought-out sequel, I think Timothy, aka "Squashy Hat," was simply too old for a romance with Nancy. Nancy would have been about 14-14 1/2 in August 1932, the time of PP. Timothy had been with Captain Flint in South America, "looking for gold where there was not any" (p. 342) which to me makes him more likely closer in age to Jim Turner than to Captain Flint's niece. Further, when asked by Captain Flint why he didn't go straight to Beckfoot, Timothy replies, "There were children popping up all over the place" (p. 349), and Nancy was one of those "children." I suspect Timothy was at least 15-20 years older than Nancy, making him between 29-34, and an improbable beau.
