Fascinating comment about shipping oars pointing forward to avoid getting passengers wet. That makes eminent sense, of course, but I was taught that it is unlucky to ship oars pointing the wrong way. I always assumed that superstition derived from the extra time it might take to get them back in place in an emergency.
