Am currently reading through "Biological Studies of the English Lakes" by T.T. Macan. Under the history section, he references "Lake District History" by W.G. Collingwood (1925) and "An introduction to the prehistory of Cumberland, Westmorland, and Lancashire north of the sands" by R.G. Collingwood (1933).

Given Ransome's own influences (his father was a history professor) and the influences of the Collingwoods, as well as Dick's fictional father the archaeologist, I wonder, had there been time, if there ever would have been an archaeological expedition similar to the geological expedition in Pigeon Post.
