The skidoos cause the same problems in parts of America, so I suppose we have to put up with the Black Jake types all over the world.

Thanks for the comments on Netscape - I then went and had a look on the web masters screen and she has a screen that is an odd size and I saw things I had not seen before on my site. Amazing what you miss.

I have been playing with the map in SW with the rough bearings. The SEbS bearing from the Kraal crossing the line marked dyke is off by about 6 degrees - it is interesting trying to resolve the errors. The map north is skewed at about 352 degrees to the sides of the page. If I was not going away on a conference I could put the analysis on the web site.

I worked out the scale on the rough map it is 1.5 inches to the mile.

I am so used to engineering degrees I have never used point on the compass (naval) how does one give a bearing that is half way between
SEbS and SSE.

I wonder if Ransome visited Swallow Island while he wrote the stories, does anyone know?

Ransome also has two bearings SWbW in the top right corner. One of those has to be wrong.

For the analysis I think I will accept the EbS NbE and SE triangle from the camp area to the Kraal as the base set out. The other thing is that there is not a scale on the rough drawing so it was an interesting exercise in working that one out. Luckily AR tends to stick to standard units. (I hope so anyway?)

I can do this with AUTOCAD and a calucator and lots of time and a hell of a lot more maths skills than young teenagers.

Maybe we should organize a re - map the Swallow Island and see if we can do it with Ransomes techniques. I have no idea if that is possible but it would be fun to try with some 10 to 14 year olds and then to GPS the results and see the differences.

Well Ed this is fun to: how is the Beckfoot paper going?

John
