Purpose:

It was much easier when I was ignorant of the web. The first web thing I wanted to do was to put Swallows drawings on the web. I used IE 6.02 for all my needs, so that was my browser in which I checked everything. Then I wanted to put Beckfoot drawings on the web as I get a fair amount of feedback from non-natives who look and send comments. (I have to get back to those drawings.)

Then I was assigned to teach a class in structures and Anne (my wife) had the classes already set up on her web site.

I was not allowed access to my web site on the UNIX box, but am allowed to change the files and then sneaker net the burned CD downstairs. I am workign on the Roger principal - if I hassle them enough they will give me FTP access.

I was using Frontpage to set up the html files but this microsoft program kept putting funny things on the page. Then I found out I could go to a free course and learn about the web development. The course used Dreamweaver and I found it was good. So I used some of my academic loot to buy Dreamweaver $180 USD for the full Studio and it was a good deal as I got Freehand and the photoprogram.

I also found HTML for Dummies in our Library - so in a month I went from web ignornant to the equivalent to a web baby (think Bridgit).

The DUMMIES book said I should check the files on the other web browsers and recommended Opera and Netscape. So I downloaded NETSCAPE a few weeks ago and I found that once I got used to it, then Netscape has some nice features. But now I have to check three browsers each time I change something.

Now I have found out that Netscape does not know (on my machine) how to read the MIME data (that Ian pointed me to - thankyou)for several file types. Yes you need autocad to see the drawings or VOVO Viewer which is a free program, but if the program is not there then Netscape should prompt to download the files and save it, and I thought I had configured it correctly - but I am still wrong.

Now I find I like Opera the bes but I am loath ot pay 40 to get rid of the add.

Oh for a simple older life style.

I will sort it out - and that is half the fun as Ransome taught us.

John
