I am absolutely sure that AR had no commercial motive in mind when he mentioned a product by name! I was just interested to see which products he did mention, and whether any of them are no longer commonplace. The answer appears to be that all the products and shops that he mentions, with the exception of red plastic plates from Woolworths, are as well known today as they were when he wrote. There are indeed cases of the use of a brand name as a generic; golden syrup and corn flakes come to mind.
