Pemmican was a food originally developed by the native peoples of Canada and became a staple food for the Victorian explorers of the Canadian North and Arctic. It would have featured in tales of those explorers which the Swallows would have read.

It isn't quite the same as biltong or jerky. Its made from dried ground meat (beef or more often deer, moose or caribou) mixed with dried berries, nuts and covered in rendered fat sometimes with some honey or sugar mixed in.

Its a high energy food with a good deal of protein which keeps well.
