While Peter's answer is much better (and in fact, close to the mark), I'm afraid I was referring to the device that is sort of a hand-powered winch. It has a cable wrapped around a drum which is turned by a longish lever on a ratchet system. With the come-along hooked to a stationary object, the combination of the long handle, the ratchet, and the drum means that you can lift, or move, very impressive weights. The one we have has the added advantage of a 2-1 block-and-tackle. They are indispensable, especially where you can’t get the tractor’s winch to come into play.
