Isn't there a reference to "learning to sail at Falmouth"? Perhaps they camped there as a family in a whacking great bell tent [possibly ex-army] as were popular in earlier times. Such a thing would certainly not have been brought to the Lake District unless there was a definite plan to use it. It would certianly not have been appropriate for Wild Cat Island anyway.
