Each volume of Harry Potter encompasses a school year or semester, with the exception of PD and ML each Ransome book encompasses a school holiday plus or minus. It does seem reasonable that the books are spread over the holidays of a few years. Our characters certainly mature. I for one have always considered them to be growing up.
