It's purely speculation, but as the whole Cumbria district has obviously been subject to glaciation, there would be a lot of moraine banks around which would have provided an easy source of coarse boulders [tillite] suitable for building. Many of the older buildings seem to have some rounded boulders amongst their fabric.
