I read Tarboard from the "Message Titles" page (look at the top of the regular Tarboard to see it as the middle of three ways of reading the messages), this puts the messages in order of arrival.
It does mean that you can't follow threads of linked messages quite so easily, though titles of subsequent messages in the same thread are added at the base.
It also puts the most recent messages at the bottom but by using the Next link you can go down in order.
