Actually it's quite possible that mobile phones (given sufficiently long-lasting batteries) could result in greater freedom of action, as it would allow the children to contact help if needed. Mrs. Walker had already asked that they check in every couple of days so she would know they were all right; surely a daily quick call would be at least as good, and knowing they could call if necessary would be better.
