Sorry Andrew but I feel you miss the point. Sailing training etc. is no substitute for what the S&As did. I have made this point before and make no apology for repeating it - to me as a child (and an adult!) the true adventure for them was that what they did was not organised by adults. As far as we can tell no one paid to let themn camp on the island, there were no adults there every moment to guide and control all the things that they did. Adult organised events such as you describe are, to me, the complete opposite of what the whold S&A series stands for.

A thought has occured to me - perhaps Nintendo, Playstations etc are so popular with children because most adults don't understand them and can't get involved when you use one!
