Yes, that price sure makes your eyes get wide, doesn't it? Fortunately, it sounds like there was about as much science to lug rig as there was to gaff: that is to say, none. As I'm planning to build the sail myself, I'll probably just design with the intent to fit the spars into the boat --and with one eye on AR's drawing of Scarab.

Yes, I've got a high-peaking gaff on my sloop, and she moves well to windward, but I doubt she has the same drive as the original Friendship sloops, who had much lower peaking gaffs as they needed horsepower to lift the lobster pots. Looking at the working boats --and fast smugglers-- of the Channel, I'd guess the same rule holds true with lug rig. Of course there are always topsails...
