Commander Walker might, just, have been aboard one of the ten gun brigs that the RN were still using as training ships at the end of the nineteenth century - I am not wholly sure when these were given over - but if he was, the ship would surely have been absolutely crammed with marlinespike seamanship!

A copy of the Admiralty Manual of Seamanship for Commander Walker's era might be "looked out for" in secondhand bookshops...
