There is a quote somewhere (too busy to look it up) from a librarian of many years ago, taking issue with a comment that AR appealed only to people in comfortable middle class. She said that most of the children who borrowed her library's books were working class, yet AR's books had to be repaired or replaced from use more than those of any other author. I am sure some avid TARBoarder can find the original.

My own upbringing was far from the world of cooks, nannies libraries (except from the downstairs angle) yet AR's books were a favourite from an early age.
