Just as another possible hypothesis, there is no doubt that the Swallows are less well heeled than either the Amazons or the D's (they don't have a boat of their own, and their are five of them, being educated on a Naval Commander's salary) so perhaps Mrs Walker, being unable to run to the cost of a trip to the Lakes at Easter as well as in the summer, came up with a small white lie about her husband's leave to excuse their absence?
