Sorry if this appears as a new thread. I didn`t know how to post a note otherwise.
Contrary to what Lawrence Monkton says, there were problems of access to land in the Lake District, albeit in the middle of the 19th century. Access battles took place on Latrigg, the lower outlier to Skiddaw, near Keswick, and over the other side of Derwentwater at Fawe Park. These events led to the formation of the Keswick and District Footpath Preservation Association in 1856. Later that century, no less a person than William Wordsworth destroyed a wall which had been deliberately built to bar passage on an ancient right of way near Ullswater. These events are covered in Howard Hill`s book "Freedom to Roam" published in 1980 by Moorland Publishing.
