Good heavens... As you say, just as well they never used them; shaped charges, even very small ones, would be so dangerous. All that energy. All it needs is a hidden rock a small way down to divert quite a bit of it back your way. And have you seen the black crud that explosives leave behind them? I'm thinking of the camp site on Wild Cat island "Look, Peggy, they've been here. I'd recognize those blackened craters anywhere."

But a fascinating idea.
