Pun? Certainly not! Sound etymology! It's "touch and go", but I hope we shall never be "hard up" for such expressions, or we might come to dislike "the cut of each other's jibs", some might think others were "sailing too close to the wind" and "in due course" like John, aboard Goblin in Harwich Harbour, we might "come to the bitter end"!
