I nearly started with "This book should be compulsory reading for every school librarian..." then realised I was being as authoritarian as the people it criticises. So...

For an excellent treatment, written for a teenage audience, of American attitudes to "Huckleberry Finn" I can recommend "The Day they came to Arrest the Book" by Nat Hentoff.

I didn't know it had been made into a film, but the attached links should take you to a couple of succinct summaries.

Warning to British readers: This book may reinforce any prejudices you may have about Americans being unable to recognise irony.
