Dear Mike,

I apologize for the mistake, I appreciate that after 50 years things like this can be frustrating. Just as having a birthday on boxing day and the comments get droll after 46 years.

To the average 12 year old the Microsoft question would be difficult and it is the type of maths that they are learning. I know because I spend some time with my daughter trying to show her a logical approach.

The other question in my mind is no harder than the Microsoft question and relies purely on the formula for a circle. A similar approach to Ed's would solve it in 2 lines. Admittedly the math is a bit harder but with a HP calculator a 12 year old should handle the math.

John
