Although brought up to drink tea with milk, I learned very early in my career as a young "Squashy Hat" that if I did not learn to drink it black and without sugar, I was going to miss out on a lot of tea. Now I would not drink it any other way. I have worked with people who were so fussy as to take their water from the opposite end of the dam from where the cow drowned. It's a bit like shoo-ing the flies away from your sandwich or barbecued food. I do think, though that we tend to accept our modern standards of awareness and forget that they are quite recent in their adoption.
