I suspect that the crew were hauling the bread aloft to then transfer the bread to another boat. It was so light (probably about 500g) that it was lighter than the friction and the rope used to pull it aloft. Hence it stayed there.

If I am wron perhaps the author could enlighten us as to the real meaning.

I looked at the Archers site. Usual bunch of talk by people who have half a graps of a subject and wish to assail everyone else. (Just lihe this Board - sorry just joking.) One of the beefs was about the name Titty -
