Having said that, I think the price of everyday things like milk was higher 'in real terms' then than now, so the higher figure is probably nearer the mark after all.
Given that the relationship between prices and wages tends to change, as well as the relative prices of products, the exchange rate is always going to be debatable. However it's nice to have a rule of thumb like this.
My father always converts things into old pence when he wants to horror at how expensive they are - 'six shillings for a bag of crisps!'
