In my 1937 Admiralty Manual of Seamanship the standard Admiralty Compass is shown as marked with just the eight most important cardinal points (N, NE, E etc) and also with degrees "as a modern ship can be steered to a degree"(!!!) But the degrees are not marked 1 to 360, but each quadrant is individually marked 1 - 90 degrees. "marked from the North and South points 0 deg to the East and West 90 deg"

If his compass was like this is it any wonder that John preferred the old fashioned points system rathe than degrees?
